This week's pupper is the beautiful and independent-thinking Akita Inu.

Akita Inu descended from dogs in the Edo Period in Akita Prefecture and were originally bred in the mountains of northern Japan in the snowy lands of Odate. These dogs were trained to take down bears, boars, and elks - they even accompanied samurai on missions.

Author and political activist Helen Keller brought the first Akitas to the US after visiting Japan and learning about Hachiko, an Akita who would accompany his owner to the train station every day and see him off to work. After Hachiko's owner died, he went every day to wait for him at the train station for almost ten years, and Keller was a fan of their faithfulness.

The majestic Akita can be assertive and aloof with strangers, but they're extraordinarily intelligent and have a strong bond with their families.

Did you know these low-maintenance dogs groom themselves as cats?
